Territory Assignment Rules in Salesforce: How to Set Them Up

Updated · By the Clientell AI team · How we write

Territory assignment rules in Salesforce place accounts into territories by field values, such as state or industry. Enable Sales Territories in Territory Settings, build a territory model, add a rule to each territory, then run the rules and activate the model. It is available in Enterprise and Unlimited with Sales Cloud, and in Performance and Developer.

How to create territory assignment rules in Salesforce

Salesforce calls this feature Sales Territories (it was called Enterprise Territory Management).

  1. 1

    Enable Sales Territories

In Setup, search for Territory Settings and click Enable Sales Territories.

  2. 2

Create territory types and a territory model

Territory types group your territories by what matters to you, such as region or segment. Then create a territory model. You can only have one active model at a time, so build and test in the Planning state.

  3. 3

    Build the territory tree

In the model, create the territories and put them in a hierarchy, for example Western States with Washington, Oregon and California below it.

  4. 4

Add a rule to a territory

Open the territory. In the Assignment Rules Defined in this Territory list, click New. Name the rule and set the criteria on account fields, such as Billing State equals CA.

  5. 5

Decide how the rule passes down

Tick Apply to child territories if the rule should also cover the territories below. Do not add the same rule again to a child territory. Tick Active if the rule should run when a user creates or updates an account.

  6. 6

    Mind two field traps

If your org uses state and country picklists, state rules must use contains matching, not equals. ZIP codes are text, so a comparison treats 9 as higher than 80000.

  7. 7

Run the rules in Planning and check the result

Run the rules for the model while it is in Planning to preview which accounts land where. Fix the criteria until the result looks right.

  8. 8

    Activate the model

Activate the model. After that, rules assign accounts when they are created or updated. For updates in the Salesforce UI, Evaluate this account against territory rules on save must be selected. For inserts, Run territory assignment rules during account inserts must be on in Territory Settings.

The Challenge

Territory assignment in Salesforce requires defining assignment rules based on geography, industry, company size, or custom criteria. Enterprise Territory Management is powerful but complex to configure, and keeping assignments current as territories change requires ongoing admin effort.

Or let Clientell AI do it

Clientell AI configures Salesforce territory assignment rules from plain English descriptions. Whether you use Enterprise Territory Management or custom territory logic, describe your territory criteria and Clientell AI builds the assignment automation.

How It Works

  1. 1

    Describe your territory criteria

Tell Clientell AI how territories are defined: by geography, industry, revenue, named accounts, or any combination of account fields.

  2. 2

    AI builds territory assignment rules

Clientell AI configures territory assignment rules within Salesforce's territory management framework or builds custom Flow-based assignment logic.

  3. 3

    Review territory configuration

Preview all territory definitions, assignment rules, and any automation before deployment.

  4. 4

    Deploy with approval

Activate territory assignments in your org after review, ensuring accounts are correctly assigned to territories and owners.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Clientell AI work with Salesforce Enterprise Territory Management?
Yes. Clientell AI can configure Enterprise Territory Management territory types, territory models, and assignment rules. It can also build custom territory logic using Flows for simpler setups.
Can territories be based on multiple criteria?
Yes. Territory assignment rules can combine geography (state, country, zip code), industry, revenue range, and any custom account fields.
How do I reassign territories when criteria change?
Describe the territory changes and Clientell AI will update the assignment rules. Salesforce can then re-run territory assignments to update account-to-territory mappings.
How do territory rules work with account hierarchy?
They are two separate trees. The territory hierarchy is territories under territories. The account hierarchy is parent and child accounts. A rule with Apply to child territories passes down the territory tree, not the account tree. Rules compare fields on each account.
Can I assign accounts to a territory by hand?
Yes. Open the territory and use Add Accounts in the Manually Assigned Accounts list. Use this for accounts that no rule can describe.
Which Salesforce editions have territory management?
Performance and Developer, and Enterprise and Unlimited with Sales Cloud, according to the Sales Territories Implementation Guide.
