Salesforce Account Hierarchy: How to Set It Up

Updated · By the Clientell AI team · How we write

A Salesforce account hierarchy links accounts through the Parent Account field. To set it up, open a child account, fill in Parent Account, and save. Then click View Account Hierarchy on the account to see the tree. Add the View Account Hierarchy action to the page layout for each profile that needs it.

How to build a multi-level account hierarchy in Salesforce

  1. 1

    Plan the tree

Decide the levels first, for example headquarters, division, then subsidiary. Each account has one parent only.

  2. 2

    Set the Parent Account

Open the child account, edit it, fill in Parent Account, and save. Repeat up the tree. For many accounts at once, load the parent link with Data Loader or the import wizard.

  3. 3

    Show the hierarchy view

Add the View Account Hierarchy action (a button in Salesforce Classic) to the account page layout for each profile that should use it. Users only see accounts they have access to, so the tree can look smaller to some people.

  4. 4

    Roll numbers up the tree

Parent Account is a lookup, not a master-detail link, so native roll-up summary fields do not work on it. Use a record-triggered Flow, Apex, or a report grouped by parent account to add up opportunity value or case counts.

  5. 5

    Clean up before you link

Merge duplicate accounts first. Two records for the same company will split the tree and the roll-ups.

The Challenge

Managing account hierarchies in Salesforce (parent-child relationships between corporate headquarters, divisions, and subsidiaries) is a manual and error-prone process. Incorrect hierarchies lead to fragmented pipeline views, inaccurate territory assignments, and incomplete customer insights.

Or let Clientell AI do it

Clientell AI helps build and maintain Salesforce account hierarchies by configuring parent account relationships, hierarchy-based automation, and roll-up reporting. Describe your organizational structure and Clientell AI generates the configuration to maintain it.

How It Works

  1. 1

    Describe your hierarchy structure

Tell Clientell AI how your accounts relate (parent-child relationships, division structures, or franchise models) and how hierarchy should be maintained.

  2. 2

    AI configures hierarchy automation

Clientell AI sets up parent account fields, hierarchy-based Flows, and any roll-up calculations needed for aggregate reporting.

  3. 3

    Review hierarchy setup

Preview parent-child configurations, automation rules, and roll-up logic before deployment.

  4. 4

    Deploy with approval

Apply hierarchy configuration to your org after review, establishing accurate account relationships.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Clientell AI set up roll-up summaries across account hierarchies?
Yes. Clientell AI can build Flow-based roll-up calculations that aggregate opportunity values, case counts, or other metrics across parent-child account hierarchies.
Does it work with Salesforce's native account hierarchy?
Yes. Clientell AI uses Salesforce's standard Parent Account field to establish hierarchies, which is compatible with native hierarchy views and reports.
Can it automate hierarchy maintenance?
Clientell AI can build automation that checks for orphaned accounts, enforces hierarchy rules, and suggests parent account assignments based on company domain or name matching.
What are account hierarchy best practices in Salesforce?
Give each account one parent. Name accounts the same way across levels. Remove duplicates before you link accounts. Add the hierarchy action to the layouts people use. Report on the parent account for totals.
Can we automate account hierarchy building?
Partly. A record-triggered Flow can fill in Parent Account when a field you trust matches, such as a company ID or website domain. Matching on company names alone causes wrong links, so review the rule on sample data first.
How do I see a multi-level account hierarchy?
Open any account in the tree and click View Account Hierarchy. The tree shows every level you have access to.
